Electives can be one of the most eagerly anticipated parts of a medical degree, but there’s no denying there’s a lot to think through and plan.
That’s why we’re excited to let you know we’ve joined forces with The Electives Network (TEN) to offer you everything you need for a successful elective.
As well as the benefits you get as a Medical Protection student member, this brilliant new partnership offers you FREE exclusive access to an extensive range of tools and resources to help you plan.
Free Elective Protection
Whether you’re able to travel abroad or decide to stay in the UK, it’s still an exciting time. This will be your first major opportunity to use the skills and knowledge you’ve learned over the last few years and experience life in a new environment.
Most countries will require you to have medical indemnity, as will institutions in the UK. As a Medical Protection student member, you will receive medical indemnity for your elective completely FREE.
Plus, as a Medical Protection member you get more than just the right to request indemnity. You’ll also be able to take advantage of a range of other benefits, including access to our medicolegal advice line, available 24/7 in an emergency to help you tackle any medicolegal or ethical dilemmas you might face.
So, whether you have a clear plan of where and when you want to go, or you need some help to firm up your ideas, together Medical Protection and TEN can help you plan the perfect elective.

Medical electives in Australia
Are you hoping to travel to Australia for your elective? If so, Australian legislation stipulates that all healthcare practitioners, including medical students, must be covered by an insurance contract while practising in Australia.
We have partnered with the MIPS (Medical Indemnity Protection Society) to provide you with a suitable insurance arrangement while in Australia on your elective.
You can apply for your free student membership with MIPS by visiting mips.com.au/membership/students.
Please remember to include your Medical Protection membership number when completing the MIPS application form.
